Southampton: Bermuda’s Golf Coast
|

Have your tee time fill with this excellent golf town.
One of Bermuda’s nine parishes in the second most western area, Southampton one served settlers as Port Royal, with origins that predates the historic Port Royal of Jamaica. The shipping center was named after the Third Earl of Southampton, Henry Wriothesley. The English aristocrat, who was also one of Shakespeare’s notable friends, helped found the major British port, even if he has never visited the place. Today you’ll see exactly what the Earl missed, starting from the sweeping views of the bay down to well-landscaped fairways at premiere golf resorts. A vacation in this part of Bermuda doesn’t have to be all out, you can have your fill of fun and excitement without breaking the bank. On Southampton’s western boundary is Chaplin Bay, a favorite among locals. Trails will lead you to breathtaking cliffs and unusual coral wall stretches that will leave you hanging for more. Untouched coastal areas such as Church Bay are perfect for snorkeling and sunbathing without the noisy crowd that usually comes along with beaches of this caliber. Golf enthusiasts will have their fill at Fairmont’s plenty of well-manicured fairways, while historical structures are also open for exploration.
Premier Golfing on a Budget
Golf was brought by the British Army in 1800, and introduced change when they allowed visitors to and just about anyone to play the sport. Golf clubs are abundant in the area, and it’s best to explore the views and location before choosing where to spend your money at.
Fairmont Southampton Hotel may not be in everyone’s best pick for a budget-friendly retreat, but there’s no denying the golf is legendary! Part of the whole Southampton Princess Hotel complex (which is the real bank breaker, and not the golf per se), the Fairmont’s golf courses offer great packages for those who want to try out te sport while enjoying sweeping views of Southampton. The hotel complex may seem to be too expensive, but Bermuda’s largest hotel is worth a visit, even if it’s just for sightseeing. Facilities up for rent are Jacuzzi pools, grottos, cabanas, fire pits, waterslides, and equipment for the 18-tee course.
Get an off-the-beaten track experience with Southampton Parish’s Bermuda Golf Academy and Driving Range, offering a pleasant alternative to the usual tee time. Guests can make use of the driving facilities to target the greens on an 12 acre site. If you can’t imagine this new set-up, head there yourself and see the refreshing change.
The Mid Ocean Golf Club features 6, 519 yards of back tees, 600 acres of rolling countryside, and a par-71 layout. It was once one of the world’s best golf courses, and it still remains a premier destination even after 90 years. It remains Bermuda’s best golf course. Though everything is decidedly expensive, the visit alone to this historical course is worth the long walks. Try sunset golfing at Port Royal Golf Course. The government-owned facility is home to challenging fairways and great coastal cliffs.
