Best Paths for Road Trips on a Budget
|

Travel at your own pace, at your own time.
Road trips are the gold standard for people who want to have a long, good time at their own pace and stop at wherever the paths take them to. But more than its savoring quality is the amount trippers can save by traveling by their vehicle. Lots of friends and family can join the fun as long as they still fit, without added costs. Road trips are perhaps the best means to travel on a budget, to spend time with loved ones, and discover hidden beauties. The only catch is that you have to know where you want to start, and let the rest unravel as mysteries—affordable at that. The best roads taken can be found along the Lake Superior Route, Pony Express National Historic Trail, and the Pacific Coast Highway.
Long Roads for Cost-Efficient Trips
No leisure vacation is more truly substantially budget-friendly than a road trip. But a journey can be much more than sightseeing while driving. It’s a perfect time for friends to bond and accumulate as much junk wrappers on the car’s floorboard. When planned right, road trips offer a rare opportunity to experience parts too often bypassed when traveling via airplanes or whatnots. Consider it a rite of passage everyone should experience and a trip shouldn’t just be aimless wandering. Here are some ideas where travelers can structure their road trips from:
• St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento, California – The 2,000-mile track of the Pony Express National Historic Trail wends through two states and several geographic zones. You would get to see the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, the Salt Lake Desert, and the Sierra Nevada, which could otherwise only be seen through expensive pre-arranged travels. Riders typically cover about 75 miles per day, so you should be able to start your journey by lunch, and hit places like the Chimney Rock and Fort Laramie National Historic Sites along the way. A few cheap motels and restaurants engulf the area.
• Duluth, Minnesota to Apple Islands, Wisconsin. – You’ll get to circle one of the world’s largest inland seas on a two-nation vacation around the Lake Superior Route. Remember to bring your passport, as you’ll hit Thunder Bay, Ontario round your way. Once you do, have a bargain meal made of smoked salmon or Finnish pancakes at the Hoito Restaurant. Gawk at the giant Canada goose statue in Wawa Ontario, sample free chunks of fudge in car-free Mackinac Island, Michigan, or enjoy sites like Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
• San Diego, California and beyond – As long as you start from San Diego, the possibilities are endless. You can pick a section or drive it all the way to the northern coast. Santa Barbara and Monterey have immaculate Big Sur coastlines, perfect for beach stopovers. Get your fill of sightseeing at places like the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose or the Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Even cheaper are the views of the Point Reyes National Seashore’s dramatic coastline in San Francisco. Budget-friendly hotels and shops can be found in towns like Fort Bragg and Mendocino.
Things to Remember for a Budget-Friendly Road Trip
To keep your budget on track, always think of a goal, a purpose, or an excuse to take you off the main routes and fill your mind with memories. Such things do not come at a cost, say climbing an occasional haystack or running after a cattle herd will not even ask a buck.
It won’t cost you much as long as you know your route. Although spontaneous road trips are fun and memorable, the expense of getting lost or farther than plan will exceed your budget. Perform some research so your routes are well calculated, including your gas.
Follow it up by planning according to a preferred season. Winter’s obviously off the list, with roads that become difficult to cross as the ice gets thicker. Summer may be too hot, especially if you plan on relying on open air for ventilation throughout the trip. You might even start craving for ice cream breaks or buy more refreshments than needed. To truly see the beauty of the roads, head by either spring or fall, when some of the roads share the beauty of natural backdrops.
See the nation, or several nations at that in your Ford, Chevrolet, or even a simple but trusty pick-up will do. Most of the costs of the trip may be allotted for the vehicle’s gas. Make sure to use a car that does not eat up more fuel than usual.
Instead of eating out at numerous stops, bring handy meals that would last your for at least two days. Loaves and other goods will save you from pangs of hunger, as well as a collection of food-related bills. Save your money for much-raved about restaurants that offer unique cuisines. After all, you’re in a road trip for an experience, a well-researched one at that.
